No plan. No subject. No decision between one color and another.
This piece was made without thought — not carelessly, but in the deepest sense of the word: without the usual noise of choosing, judging, second-guessing. Color was allowed to move where it moved. The hand followed, and nothing stood between the two.
That state is harder to reach than it sounds — a discipline closer to meditation than to painting, the quieting of everything that normally interferes between an impulse and its expression. What's on this canvas isn't a picture of anything. It's a record of what happens when nothing gets in the way.
